Montserrat: The UFO Mountain

Montserrat is one of the most emblematic places in Catalunya. This imposing mountain, some 30 kilometres from Barcelona, is famous for its Benedictine monastery and La Moreneta, its Black Madonna. But beyond its religious history and peculiar geology, Montserrat is also one of the best-known UFO-spotting sites in Spain.

Since 1977, on the 11th day of every month, a group of people has been meeting at the so-called “UFO Esplanade”, a natural viewpoint where they claim it is possible to see strange lights and objects in the sky that defy all logical explanation. The phenomenon has turned the mountain into a place of pilgrimage, not just for Catholic believers but also for enthusiasts of mystery and the unknown.

The UFO gatherings at Montserrat

The man behind this tradition is Luis José Grifol, who in the 1970s claimed to have made telepathic contact with beings from other worlds on this mountain. From then on, he set out to spread his message and organise gatherings to watch the sky for extraterrestrial signals.

According to Grifol and other witnesses, Montserrat has produced sightings of lights that move erratically, glowing spheres and even shadows crossing the sky with no logical explanation. Some put these phenomena down to ordinary planes or satellites, but the UFO faithful are convinced that something more is going on here.

Coincidence or real phenomenon? What is certain is that Montserrat is one of the most magnetic mountains in Europe, and some theories suggest its geological make-up could be linked to these sightings.

A mountain wrapped in mystery

Montserrat is a mountain with a special energy. It has been a sacred place since ancient times, and it is also surrounded by myths and legends.

  • In the Middle Ages, strange lights were said to appear above the mountain, and the monks who lived in the monastery watched them in awe.
  • Today, some people claim Montserrat could be a gateway to other dimensions or an energy portal through which beings from other worlds communicate with Earth.

Theories aside, it is a wonderful place to enjoy a night of stargazing, whether you are hunting UFOs or simply taking in the beauty of the starry sky.
