The Girl on the Curve of Jafra
In the Garraf massif, between Sitges and Castelldefels, lies Jafra, an abandoned village that keeps one of the most unsettling stories in Catalonia. Those who have walked its paths say something strange hangs in the air, and many claim to have seen the figure of a little girl on the road. Her name is Melinda, and her story has been passed down through the generations, feeding a legend of fear and mystery.
The origin of the legend
In the late 19th century, a wealthy family of Austrian origin settled in a masia, a traditional Catalan farmhouse, near Jafra. They did so because their three children had a skin disease that forced them to live in isolation. So the children could play safely, the family had a maze of trees and shrubs built in their vast garden.
Soon afterwards, the mother gave birth to a fourth child, Melinda, but died in childbirth. From then on, misfortune followed the family. The three older children died mysteriously, and the father, worn down by grief and by the fear of losing Melinda, began to behave strangely.
One day, while the girl was playing in the garden, her father chased her in a fit of madness. Desperate to get away, Melinda fell into a well and disappeared. Her body was never found, and her father, a broken man, vanished without a trace.
Melinda’s apparitions
Since then, many say her spirit still wanders the area. Some claim to have seen her in the Garraf woods, helping those who get lost find their way back. But the most striking story is that of the Girl on the Curve.
They say that on the C-31 road, which links Sitges and Castelldefels, some drivers have seen a girl dressed in white who appears suddenly on the road. She climbs into the car without a sound and, in a faint voice, warns the driver of danger ahead. When the driver turns to look at her, she vanishes without a trace.
Jafra, a cursed village
Even before Melinda’s story, the village of Jafra had a reputation as a mysterious place. Documented since 1139, it was abandoned in the 1960s. Today only the ruins of the church of Santa Maria remain, along with a few old houses that once belonged to the barons of Jafra.
Those who have explored the ruins tell of strange experiences: whispering voices, weeping at dusk and the feeling that someone is watching. All this has turned Jafra into a magnet for lovers of the paranormal.
Myth or reality?
There is no proof behind Melinda’s story, yet her legend lives on. Is it just a tale to frighten travellers, or is there something more in the Garraf mist?
For many, the Girl on the Curve of Jafra is not just a myth, but a reminder that some spirits never find rest.
