The Mysterious Light of Manresa

In the heart of Catalonia, the city of Manresa is home to one of the region’s most fascinating legends: the Misteriosa Llum, or Mysterious Light. This phenomenon, said to have taken place in the 14th century, marked a milestone in local history and gave rise to a celebration that continues to this day.

The Historical Context

The year was 1345, and Manresa was suffering a severe drought that threatened its inhabitants’ survival. To remedy the situation, work began on a canal that would carry water from the Llobregat river to the city. The works were halted, however, by the bishop of Vic, Galceran Sacosta, who claimed they encroached on church lands. The conflict led to the city’s excommunication and brought construction to a standstill.

The Miracle of the Light

According to tradition, on February 21, 1345, a shining light appeared on the mountain of Montserrat and headed toward Manresa. The light entered the church of El Carme, illuminating the temple and astonishing everyone present. The event was read as a divine sign of heavenly approval for the canal to go ahead. Impressed by the phenomenon, the bishop lifted the excommunication and allowed the works to continue.

The Festa de la Llum

Since then, every February 21 Manresa has celebrated the Festa de la Llum, the Festival of the Light, in commemoration of this miracle. The festivities include a series of events combining tradition, culture and spirituality:

The walk: participants retrace the route from Montserrat to Manresa, symbolizing the arrival of light and water in the city.

Service at the church of El Carme: a religious ceremony is held on the very spot where the miracle occurred, in memory of the event.

Fira de l’Aixada: a medieval fair that recreates life at the time of the miracle, with artisans, shows and activities for all ages.

What It Means Today

The Misteriosa Llum of Manresa goes beyond the religious sphere and has become a symbol of hope and perseverance. The annual celebration commemorates a historic event and, at the same time, strengthens the city’s cultural identity and its bond with ancestral traditions.

The legend of the Misteriosa Llum invites us to reflect on how faith and determination can light up even the darkest moments in history. Manresa, with its deep cultural roots, remains a beacon for anyone seeking inspiration in the origins of Catalonia.
