The Enigma of the Dones d’Aigua of the Montseny
Deep in the Montseny, where the mist brushes hundred-year-old trees and the rivers whisper ancient secrets, live the enigmatic dones d’aigua, Catalonia’s water women. Wrapped in mystery, these beings have starred in legends that have endured for centuries, weaving a veil of intrigue over the region’s crystal-clear waters.
The Origin of the Legend
The dones d’aigua are said to be female spirits of extraordinary beauty, with long golden hair and shimmering garments. They dwell in the ponds, rivers and gorgs (deep river pools) of the Montseny, emerging on full-moon nights to dance on the water and comb their hair with combs of gold. Their presence is so ethereal that those who have had the fortune —or the misfortune— of seeing them are left spellbound by their supernatural charm.
The Legend of the Gorg Negre
One of the most haunting stories is that of the dona d’aigua of the Gorg Negre, in Gualba. Legend has it that one full-moon night, the owner of Can Prat de Gualba came upon a woman of matchless beauty rising from the Gorg Negre. Smitten on the spot, he proposed marriage, and she accepted on one condition: he must never mention her watery origin. They lived happily and had children, but one day, in the middle of an argument, he broke his promise and spoke of where she came from. The dona d’aigua vanished at once into the depths of the gorg, leaving her family sunk in sorrow.
The Mystery Lives On
These tales reflect the deep bond between the people of the Montseny and their natural surroundings, along with the respect and fascination they feel for the mysteries it holds. The dones d’aigua embody the beauty and power of nature, reminding us how much depends on keeping balance and harmony with the environment.
To explore the Montseny is to step into a world where reality and fantasy intertwine, giving visitors the chance to uncover the secrets and stories that have shaped Catalonia’s culture and folklore.
