Pratdip, Land of the Dips
Tucked away in the Baix Camp region, in the province of Tarragona, sits the village of Pratdip. This small municipality of barely a few hundred inhabitants is known for its natural beauty and historic heritage, but above all for a legend that has deeply shaped its identity: that of the Dips.
A stroll through Pratdip
Wandering the narrow cobbled streets of Pratdip, you come across traces of its medieval past. The old walls still keep two square defence towers, silent witnesses of another age. The parish church of Santa Maria, a blend of Gothic and Romanesque styles, invites you to pause and take in its architecture and calm. On a nearby hill, the ruins of Pratdip castle offer sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and whisper stories of days gone by.
The legend of the Dips
What truly sets Pratdip apart, though, is the legend of the Dips. According to local tradition, these beings were demonic black dogs that prowled the outskirts of the village. They were said to come out at night, their glowing eyes piercing the darkness, and attack livestock to drink its blood. Some accounts even claim the dips would go after people wandering alone after dark. The legend is so deeply rooted in local culture that Pratdip’s coat of arms bears the figure of one of these mythical dogs.
Festivities and culture
Far from hiding their legend, the people of Pratdip celebrate it with pride. Every year, around 31 October, the village holds the Pratdip Llegendari festival. For the occasion, the town transforms to relive its legendary past with workshops, children’s activities, roving street performances and a food fair. It is a rare chance to soak up the mystical atmosphere of the place and learn more about the dips and other local tales.
Nature and surroundings
Legends aside, Pratdip enjoys a privileged natural setting. Sitting at the foot of the Serra de Llaberia, it is an ideal starting point for hiking routes through Mediterranean landscapes, crystal-clear springs and a surprising wealth of wildlife. The hermitage of Santa Marina, a few kilometres from the village centre, is well worth a visit, both for its historical value and for its natural surroundings.
A place that stays with you
Pratdip is not just a pretty village with a past: it is a place that breathes legend on every corner. Whether you come for the mystery of the dips, for the medieval streets or simply to lose yourself along its trails, this corner of Tarragona has that “something” you will not forget
