Montsoriu Castle: Legends and Mysteries

The Red Lady of Montsoriu

One of the most intriguing stories tied to the castle is that of the Red Lady. According to popular tradition, every year on the night of Sant Joan (Midsummer’s Eve), as midnight strikes, a naked lady known as the Red Lady appears on the tower of Montsoriu Castle, a burning torch in her left hand and a hunting horn in the other. When she sounds the horn, a knight on a black horse appears, pulls the Red Lady up behind him, and the two vanish into the blackness of the night.

The Wandering Knight

Another legend tells of a knight who, after committing dishonorable deeds, was condemned to roam the castle’s corridors for all eternity. His spirit, mounted on a black horse, is said to ride through the halls in search of redemption. Some visitors claim to have heard the echo of hooves ringing on the stone during the darkest nights.

The Witch Guillermina

The castle is also linked to tales of witchcraft. It is said that a witch named Guillermina lived among its ruins and that every night she would come out with her retinue of servants dressed in white, amid terrifying screams.
